Fire and Rescue Services – Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Introduction

We consider ourselves at RightTrack, really lucky to have worked with various Fire and Rescue Authorities over the years, assisting them with their Equality and Diversity needs.

Our Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Paula Whelan, is at the forefront of these projects; heading up many initial conversations with authorities, establishing and agreeing how specific programmes are to be set up and delivered.

The Programmes

The programmes we design include everything from Unconscious Bias in Recruitment & Management, EDI for everyone and one of our most popular programmes; Diversity and Inclusion with Drama.

It goes without saying, that the programmes are facilitated by highly experienced specialists within the ED&I field but we also enhance the learning by using professional facilitation of carefully written scripts, memorable media video clips, peer learning, thought-provoking case studies, competitive quizzes and strong personal action plans, which are all created to penetrate the long-term memory of delegates.

We also add in aspects when it comes to ROI with both pre and post-course questionnaires for delegates. We always endeavour to go above and beyond to create lasting change in delegates.

Learning Objectives

Our programmes are totally bespoke for each authority, ensuring they totally hit the spot, but the learning objectives are always consistent.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for Everyone

  • To recognise the benefits of Diversity and Inclusion and understand why they should be actively practiced at work and in-service delivery
  • To understand the importance of everyone practicing and promoting Diversity and Inclusion… and know how to do this
  • Be able to appreciate the benefits of a workplace where dignity and respect are the norm for all
  • Be aware of Equality Law (The Equality Act 2010) and understand how it applies to us all
  • Be able to recognise inappropriate and discriminatory behaviours. But most important, to know what to do!
  • Have tangible, positive actions to take back to work

Unconscious Bias in Recruitment

  • To increase understanding of Unconscious Bias and how it can impact on the interviewing and selection process
  • To increase the level of competence and confidence in relation to interviewing skills
  • To cultivate and embed a consistent, organisation wide approach to interviewing
  • Understand the filters through which we view and interpret ourselves and other people in the context of recruitment and selection and day to day interactions
  • To appreciate how unconscious bias can adversely affect judgement and decision making and negatively impact on selection in every stage of a recruitment process
  • Experience what micro inequities are and how they can influence performance and decisions
  • Learn how affinity bias affects rapport building and the effectiveness of a recruitment interview
  • Contextualise to your organisational norms and processes
  • Take away practical hints and tips to guard against unconscious bias in recruitment and selection
