This half-day programme is designed to equip participants from international organisations with the knowledge and skills necessary to create an environment of inclusion and cultural competence. By exploring the multifaceted nature of unconscious bias, cultural differences, and the principles of inclusive communication, this course aims to challenge assumptions, broaden perspectives, and create better cohesion and understanding between global teams.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
Universal Inclusion: To set the tone for the day and get participants into their growth zone, we’ll start with an activity called ‘New World Rules’ designed to break the ice and establish a common understanding of inclusion and diversity in global settings.
Global Perspectives on Unconscious Bias: Participants will explore the complexities of unconscious bias in a global context. Through facilitated discussions, participants will examine how cultural norms and values shape the development and manifestation of biases. They will explore examples of biases specific to different cultural contexts and how they can affect interpersonal and professional interactions.
How this looks with actors:
Participants will be immersed in a live-action scenario that vividly illustrates the subtle onset of microaggressions within multicultural teams. This experiential learning opportunity simulates a workplace environment where behaviours that may initially appear benign gradually reveal their exclusionary impact.
Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity: Participants will explore the concepts of cultural awareness and sensitivity. Through interactive discussions, they will learn about cultural dimensions (e.g., Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory) and how these influence behaviours, communication styles, and work preferences. Discussion and activities will focus on the tangible aspects of creating an inclusive workplace. We will introduce the concept of cultural intelligence (CQ) and its components: cognitive, motivational, and behavioural.
Language and Universal Principles: We will examine how inclusive language and universal principles can help create an environment where all individuals feel welcome and respected. Participants will learn how language can either bridge or widen gaps between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. They will learn about the importance of using gender-neutral terms, avoiding jargon, and being mindful of cultural idioms and expressions that may not translate well across cultures. We will introduce universal principles that support an inclusive environment, such as respect, empathy, and equity.
Cross-Cultural Understanding and Communication: Participants will explore the complexities of communicating across diverse cultures and languages, taking into consideration common barriers and misunderstandings, with some examples of miscommunications by global companies. Participants will develop strategies for overcoming language barriers and ensuring clear, inclusive communication. We discuss strategies to create a more encouraging and supportive environment, linking back to the icebreaker exercise.
How this looks with actors:
Participants will engage in a dynamic scenario that brings to light the nuanced challenges of cultural faux pas and miscommunications. In this interactive exercise, participants navigate common linguistic and cultural misunderstandings. As these interactions unfold, seemingly innocuous remarks or actions create unintended consequences, highlighting the importance of cultural competence and language intricacies.
Managing Cross-Cultural Teams: Building on the foundations of cultural understanding, we will equip participants with practical tools to embrace cultural differences and apply this knowledge to enhance workplace interactions, problem-solving, and creativity. This includes developing strategies for making meaningful connections across cultural boundaries and understanding the role of cultural awareness in creating an inclusive workplace.
Action Planning for Diversity and Inclusion: Participants will work collaboratively to develop concrete action plans to promote diversity and inclusion within their workplaces. They will have the opportunity to provide feedback, discuss future learning opportunities, and leave with a clear understanding of the steps needed to promote ongoing inclusion and cultural competence.
